Abstract:

The teleoperation systems enable humans to carry out tasks in a remote or hazardous environment.           A typical teleoperation system is commonly made-up of the operator, the master robot, the communication channel, the slave robot and the task environment. The operator’s task performance in teleoperation is greatly improved if haptic feedback about interaction occurring between the remote robot and the remote environment is provided to the human operator through the local robot. Such teleoperation systems are called bilateral as information flows in two directions between the operator and the remote environment. In bilateral teleoperation, there are two main objectives. The first goal is that the slave robot tracks the position of the master robot and the other is that the operator should feel the environmental force, this objective is called transparency. Nevertheless, the main control objective is stability. In fact the main purpose has been designing a stable control scheme for transmission of position, velocity and force signals from master robot to slave robot and vice versa. Because of the usual significant distance between master and slave robots, time delays are unavoidable when data are transmitted between the local and remote sites. These time delays can destabilize and degrade the tracking performance of the closed-loop telerobotic systems if they are not well compensated. In practice, the communication delay can be time-varying and asymmetric in the forward and backward paths. Many control schemes have been proposed in the literature to compensate time- delay.

A common assumption in most of proposed controllers is that the actuators are able to provide any requested torque and the exact knowledge of the master and the slave dynamic models is available. But, in practice the exact information of the dynamic model of robots may be unavailable due to the model uncertainties and also, actuators have physical constraints that limit the amplitude of the available torques. Controllers that ignore these factors, may cause undesirable responses, thermal or mechanical failure and even closed-loop instability. Therefore, it is necessary to develop control schemes that take actuator saturation and dynamic uncertainties  into account.

Considering four problems in practical applications of teleoperation systems, such as the time-varying delay with no restriction on their rates of variation, nonpassive input force, parametric uncertainty and actuator saturation, This thesis presents three new control schemes for teleoperation system. In the first scheme; a bounded adaptive control approach is addressed to cope with parametric uncertainties and actuator saturation in bilateral teleoperation systems under asymmetric time-varying delays in the communication channel. The designed controller has the ability to synchronize the position and velocity of the master and slave manipulator and avoids the inputs to reach their usual saturation bounds in the presence of time-varying delays and parametric uncertainties. Using a novel Lyapunov –Krasovskii functional the stability and asymptotic zero convergence of the tracking errors are proved and adaptive update laws are derived to make the system robust for constant parametric uncertainties.

In the second scheme, a new bounded adaptive control law is proposed to provide better transparency as measured in terms of position and force tracking ability in bilateral teleoperation systems. The three problems simultaneously addresse in practical applications of nonlinear teleoperation systems are input saturation, asymmetrical time-varying communication delay and parametric uncertainty. On the slave side, a nP+nD controller with nonlinear adaptive terms and a nonlinear function of the environment force are employed locally to cope with actuator saturation, parametric uncertainty and improve position tracking. On the master side, a nP+nD controller with the nonlinear function of the human force and force error are also employed to improve force tracking performance and cope with actuator saturation. The derivatives of time delays can take any limited values. The stability of the system are assessed using a novel Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional and asymptotic stability and position and force tracking under delay-dependent stability conditions are proven. An adaptive update law is derived to make the system robust for constant parametric uncertainty.

In third scheme in order to achieve stability, optimal operation and cope with actuator saturation in the present of asymmetric time-varying delays, we propose optimal controller using HPM- Pade method. The results verify effectiveness of controller.
