Abstract: Renewable (e.g. photovoltaic (PV), wind generation) and non-conventional (e.g. fuel cell (FC)) energy sources have attracted many interests in recent decades for their effective environmental and economical aspects. Renewable energy sources (RESs) have intermittent nature due to their power generation dependence on environmental factors (e.g. ambient temperature, sun irradiation level, wind). Therefore, the usage of multiple energy sources can alleviate the mentioned problem. Meanwhile, the use of energy storage system such as battery can improve transient and dynamic characteristics of hybrid energy systems (HESs) supplied by renewable and FC energy sources. In HESs, energy is transferred from sources to the load by multiple single-input DC/DC converters or a multi-input DC/DC converter. To improve the performance of renewable and FC energy sources, in this dissertation, conventional DC/DC converters (e.g. Boost, Buck, Buck/Boost, Cuk, Sepic) are integrated with battery source in a unified structure. In three port converters (i.e. converters integrated with battery), maximum power is tracked for RESs and output voltage is regulated. Then, by extension of conventional boost topology for the higher number of inputs (n inputs), three multi-input step-up DC/DC converters (MISUC) are proposed for HESs. The proposed converters interface multiple energy sources of different output characteristics with a common load efficiently. The presented MISUCs are suitable for a wide range of applications from low to high voltage/power in HESs. In the proposed MISUCs, the higher voltage gain is achieved by increasing the number of inputs. The first and second proposed MISUCs are designed without battery. Due to use of the switched inductor modules in each input of the second MISUC, its voltage gain is higher than the first MISUC. In the third proposed MISUC, a bidirectional port is considered for the battery to regulate the output voltage at the reference value appropriately by battery charging/discharging when necessary. The battery is charged/discharged by all the input sources and the associated duty cycle is independent of the duty cycles corresponding to the input sources. The multiport converters, as a MIMO system, have to be controlled by a multi-variable control method. Therefore, the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) control is applied to control the proposed converters. The performance of the proposed converters is verified by simulation (in PSCAD/EMTDC) and experimental results. The results show that output powers of input sources are appropriately adjusted at their references and output voltage is properly regulated.
