Abstract:

The prediction of the flow characteristics in compound channels with prismatic and non-prismatic floodplains is a challenging task for hydraulics engineers due to the three-dimensional nature of the flow. In prismatic compound channels, the main feature consists of the interaction effect between the fast moving flow in the main channel and the slow moving flow on the floodplains. This difference causes a high shear layer at the interface between the main channel and floodplain, leading to the generation of the large-scale vortices with vertical axes, as well as the helical secondary flow with longitudinal axes. The complexity of the problem rises when the compound channel is no longer a straight prismatic channel. For example, in compound channels with skewed floodplains, due to changes in geometry, water flowing on the floodplain crosses over water flowing in the main channel, resulting in increased interaction between subsections. In this research an attempt has been made to model flow filed in two skewed compound channel cases using ANSYS-CFD software with four turbulence models of k-e, k-e Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Models (EARSM), Eddy Viscosity Transport Equation (Eddy) and Speziale-Sarkar-Gatski (SSG) turbulence model. The results of velocity and shear stress distributions modelling were then compared with the experimental data on compound channel with skewed floodplains (skewed angles of 5.1o and 9.2o). Study shows that all turbulence models are abale to predict depth-averaged velocity distributions fairly well, but when we come to the shear stress modeling, diffrence between the numerical results and and exerimental bata increase. Also present of secondary circulation cels in the main channel have been predicted by tubulence models only for high relative depth and skewed angle.
