Stone Matrix Asphalt with gap-graded mixture that has a better performance than conventional HMA (Hot Mix Asphalt). This mixture that has a large percentage of the coarse aggregates, due to aggregate to aggregate contact, will have a better load distribution load and deformation performance and has been used in many countries in the world. Because of gap-graded aggregates, the Stone Matrix Asphalt has a relatively more content of bitumen and fiber is used to prevent drain down. In many countries mostly, cellulose fibers are used as stabilizers. In fact, this product is not manufactured in Iran and importing is expensive, and using native products, lead to economical conservation. Steel slag is a by-product of the steel industry. Approximately, one ton of steel slag produced during the production of three tons of stainless steel. Steel slag consumption rate in developing countries such as Iran is low and using and using steel slag is considered as an important environmental benefit.

The purpose of this study is to use of jute fibers as stabilizers and steel slag as coarse aggregates in Stone Matrix Asphalt.  Results will be compared with coarse aggregate mixture with cellulose fibers as stabilizer and steel slag as coarse aggregates. Also, Steel slag and limestone aggregate as coarse aggregate is used in hot mix asphalt, and the results compared with previous tests.  At the optimum bitumen content, drain down tests, rutting characteristics tests, and wheel track performed on SMA mixture and for those specimens that made with steel slag in both mixtures, resilient modulus and moisture susceptibility tests were carried out.

The results showed that the simultaneous use of steel slag aggregates and jute fibers as a stabilizer in SMA is possible. In most experiments, performance was well and even better than the SMA mixture containing the cellulose fibers. Optimum bitumen content, Marshall stability of SMA mixtures containing jute fibers was more than those specimens containing cellulose fibers, and the flow rate was less.  Results from drain down test for SMA mixtures containing cellulose or jute fibers indicate that both fibers have stabilized mixtures well. Resilient modulus of SMA mixtures containing jute fiber is higher than mixture containing cellulose fibers. The results of moisture susceptibility test of mixture containing both types of fibers indicates that  SMA mixture with both types of fibers, has sufficient resistance against moisture susceptibility, and mixtures containing of jute fiber show a slight more resistance against humidity. Result of rutting characteristics of mixture containing cellulose and jute fibers indicate that rutting resistance are the same. Optimum bitumen content, Marshall resistance of hot mix asphalt concrete containing steel slag was more and the flow rate was less than limestone aggregates. Marshall stability and resilient modulus of Hot Mix Asphalt due to the uniform aggregate and less amount of bitumen as predicted by other researchers is more than SMA mixtures.
