Abstract: According to the increase demand of energy for humanity, use of renewable sources of energy instead of fossil sources attracts more and more attention. Among these renewables sources, solar energy is one of the most accessible and purest sources which is expanding day by day. There are many ways for extracting solar energy that one of the common ways is use of photovoltaic cells. Utilization of solar energy causes some problems like energy source instability, difference between generation and load pattern and need for the maximum power point tracking. So power electronic converters are used widely and maximum power point tracking is done by controlling these converters. Photovoltaic cell has a nonlinear characteristic which varies with irradiation and temperature that's just one operating point which maximum power extracts from panel. Main problem is maximum power point varies nonlinearly according to the irradiation and temperature; Therefor we need an algorithm which can track maximum power point. Because it is necessary to increase efficiency of photovoltaic cell, algorithm should have high speed and low steady state error in tracking maximum power point.

In the third chapter a new hybrid MPPT method has been proposed which is a combination of two phases. In the first phase which is done Base on Model, the MPP is estimated using analytical equations and model of PV system while considering ambient temperature, irradiation and also load model. In the second phase, classic perturbation and observation (P&O) method will be used to follow the maximum power point exactly moving from initial point provided by the first stage.

Since adding more sensors imposes extra costs and complexity to implementation of MPPT method, in the next section, a new sensor less hybrid method is proposed. This method needs measurement of only two variables (voltage and current) and two other sensors can be removed from control part. The method consists of two loops: VMPP estimation and fine tuning. In the first loop, voltage and current of the panel are measured and some computations are carried out to calculate the irradiance and temperature from the measured voltage and current. Then these variables are used to estimate VMPP. In the second (fine tuning) loop, INC method with a small fixed step size is employed to track exact MPP. The INC is used because of its easy implementation and having minimum oscillations around MPP.

In the estimation loop, IPV and VPV are measured and then used to calculate T and G using PV characteristic provided by PV panel manufacturer. The calculated T and G are used for estimating the OCV. This estimation phase doesn’t have the drawbacks of the conventional OCV method, in the other word there is no need to shed the load and open the circuit. Also there is no need to use sensors for measuring the temperature and irradiance.
