Abstract:

Dispersive clays are one of the problematic soils that once contact by water, lose their cohesion, erode, and dissolve with the dispersion of particles around them. The main factor in the dispersion of clay particles is, in fact, the dominant of repulsive forces among the clay particles. The soil dispersion is affected by the clay mineralogy, the chemistry of the pore water and eroding fluids, and the dissolved salts in the soil. It is also particularly affected by the presence of active clay minerals, such as montmorillonite, and the presence of sodium cations in pore water and double layer of soil. The use of dispersive clayey soils in engineering project such as earth dams, irrigation canals, and road embankments can result in project inefficiency or even soil failure. Hence, treatment and controlling the existing dispersive soils seems necessary. Accordingly, many studies have been carried out on the methods for the stabilization of dispersive soils by the use of additives such as lime, cement, and pozzolan. Disturbance, soil displacement, difficulty for injection in clay, and the use of materials with high environmental effects have been the restrictions of common methods of dispersivity elimination. On the other hand, new additives are not very practical because of limited production and cost-effectiveness. The electrokinetics method due to low cost, low environmental effects, and ease of implementation have been considered, as one of the most commonly used, relatively modern technologies for modifying problematic soils, improvement of engineering properties, and remediation of contaminant from surface and contaminated soils. The electrokinetics method by applying an electric field to a pair of positive and negative electrodes in a soil mass causes the electrolysis of water molecules and the production of hydrogen ions in the anode electrode, which move towards the cathode in the electrical field. The interaction of these ions with the clayey porous mass located between the two electrodes reduces the pH of the soil and, consequently, reduces the net charge of clay particles and decreases the amount of soil dispersion. On the other hand, due to the mechanism of electro-osmotic flow and electro-migration, the pore fluid, along with those of the anode reservoir electrolyte cations, as well as the sodium cations in the pore water, are transferred to the cathode and leave it out. Therefore, the effect of the set of these mechanisms has made the electrokinetics process a suitable method to improve the dispersed behavior of dispersive clayey soils. Although the effect of the electrokinetics process on the properties of dispersive soil has been studied, insufficient research has been conducted on the enhancement of this process with chemicals. Furthermore, there is a lack of research on the effect of stabilizing injectable materials such as calcium ion on increasing the efficiency of electrokinetics. In addition to the above, previous investigations haven not focused on the issue of evaluation of changes in the microstructure of the soil in the electrokinetics process. Accordingly, the main objectives of this research are to investigate the effect of electrokinetics processes on dispersivity elimination of dispersive soil, without enhancement and by enhancement with calcium ion, as well as investigation on the impact of concentration of calcium ion on the efficiency of this method.

To achieve the above objectives, the natural dispersive clay containing 25% natural carbonate with dispersion percent of 82.6 (high dispersiveness) was selected. Clay samples with 20% moisture content were placed in the test cell and then subjected to unenhanced and enhanced electrokinetics processes with calcium chloride solution at concentrations of 0.2 and 0.5 molar, in the short, medium and long periods of time, with 240, 480, and 1200 hours. During the process of electrokinetics experiments, pH and EC values in the anode and cathode reservoirs, the electrical current, and the rate of electro-osmotic discharge were measured and reported. After extracting the soil sample from cell, pH values and moisture content were measured. In order to study the improvement of dispersion properties and to investigate the macro-structural and microstructural changes of clay samples, double hydrometer test, and sedimentation test were also performed on samples.

The results of the experiments show that with 240 hours electrokinetics treatment, the dispersion improvement was close to the middle of the cell and the dispersion percentage near the anode compartment was reached to 12%. Increasing the test time to 480 and 1200 hours resulted in an improvement in the percentage of dispersion up to the cathode neighborhood. Nevertheless, an increase in dispersion percentage is observed very close to the cathode compartment, especially in experiments of 240 and 480 hours. The use of 0.2 molar and 0.5 molar calcium chloride enhancement solutions in 240 hours electrokinetics experiment reduced the 50% and 75% of dispersion percent, respectively, in the vicinity of the cathode. By injecting calcium ion with calcium chloride solution in the anode compartment and transferring them by electro-osmotic flow and electro-migration mechanisms toward the cathode, due to the osmosis and valence effect of calcium ions, sodium ions are expelled from the double layer. Therefore, the thickness of the double layer is decreased and the dispersion percentage is reduced. The results of the sedimentation experiments also showed that with decreasing dispersion, aggregation of particles occur which cause an increase in soil sedimentation and reduction in sedimentation duration.
