Abstract:
Oil contamination is one of the most common types of contamination both in sea and land, due to various reasons such as leakage during the oil drilling, tanker accidents, leakage from transmission pipes, oil tanker coalitions or accidents, and enemy attacks to oil infrastructures. In addition to the negative effect on the environment and ecological life, this contamination causes changes in the geotechnical properties of soils. Many researches have been carried out on the effect of oil contamination on the geotechnical properties of different soils, most of them include the effect of contamination on the soil strength and compaction. But the permeability of soils as the most important factor in the diffusion and transmission of contamination has attracted less attentions. Due to the large amount of contaminated soils, the removal of contamination from the soil is time-consuming, non-economic, and in cases where the soil is contaminated under the structures, it is almost impossible. Therefore, preventing further contamination diffusion, reducing the negative effects of contaminated soil under the structures, and where possible, transferring contaminated soil as a material suitable for construction projects is necessary.
In this study, the permeability of soils contaminated with oil has been investigated to understand the behavior and ability to predict the pollution diffusion into soil. Two different types of sandy soils were used in three relative densities of 40, 60 and 75 percent. The pollutants in these tests include crude oil and two types of engine oils of 10 and 40 SAE. The test specimens were prepared by mixing the soil with 2, 4, and 6% the contaminating materials in relation to dry weight of the soil, and their effect on the horizontal and vertical permeability of the soil was investigated by a hydraulic consolidation apparatus. Also, the effect of adding cement and clay to reduce the permeability of contaminated soil has been investigated.
The results of experiments show that for all specimens, soil contamination decreases permeability in both horizontal and vertical directions. By increasing the amount of contamination and increasing the viscosity of the pollutant, the effect of pollution on the permeability is increased and the decrease in permeability is more evident. By increasing the soil relative density, permeability decreases, but in specimens with 75% relative density, has more effect than relative density of 60 and 40 percent, and reducing the permeability with increasing pollution, has been made more quickly. For sand with larger grain size, the permeability is greater than of sand with finer grain size, and the effect of contamination is greater in reducing its permeability. The results of experiments with cement stabilization showed that by adding cement slurry to specimens and increasing the amount of cement soil permeability is greatly reduced. Also, adding clay to specimens and increasing the amount of clay can reduce soil permeability, but less than the cement effect.
