Abstract:
Due to increasing development of coastal constructions, assessing the risk of liquefaction in the earthquake-prone the country of Iran, which has large areas of saturated or nearly saturated sand, is of special importance. Sandy soils might contain fines that affect their behavioural properties. Researchers have found that the concept of critical state soil mechanics (CSSM) can provide a suitable framework for describing the behavior of fine-grained sands and also sands containing fines. Yet, the results presented by different researchers on the resistance of different sands against liquefaction, indicate significant variations, warranting further research to explain apparently conflicting results.
In this study, the static and cyclic response of Anzali Shore sand with different fines content was investigated within the framework of critical state soil mechanics. Experiments conducted include triaxial and stress controled cyclic triaxial tests. Monotonic tests were conducted to determine the critical state line (CSL) of Anzali shore sand with different percentages of silt. The cyclic tests started with various levels of initial stresses and under different cyclic stress ratios. Excess pore water pressures generated and the changes in the shear modulus of the soils were monitored.
Results of the experiments show that the presence of non-plastic fines influences the static and dynamic properties of the sandy soil. Based on the static results, for fine percentages below a certain threshold, the increase of silt would result in a downward move of the CSL. At low consolidation stresses, these lines are nearly parallel to each other. CSLs of different combinations of sand and fines in the space was determined, resulting in a single CSL for all the combinations of sand and silts in this space. Further, the results showed that for fine percentages below a certain level, the increase in silt increases excess pore water pressure and reduces the shear modulus. It was also observed that the shear modulus increases with increasing distance of the soils state from the CSL. Samples with lower percentages of silt at large distances to the CSL had the highest values of shear modulus. Factors like the percentage of silt, state parameter and consolidation stress influence the shear modulus of the sands containing fine.
