چکیده: Abstract: Traditional buildings have been proven to be adapted to climatic conditions. However, their water footprint (WF) benefits have not been discussed in the literature. These buildings involve various traditional construction materials and techniques. Their construction follows a chain of raw material extraction, processing, transportation and construction activities, each with its own water pollution (grey WF) and consumption (blue WF). This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the blue and grey WFs of the materialization phase of the structure of traditional buildings of Iran constructed based on water-saving patterns and practical climate concepts. A sample of 11 construction material plans and 34 typical traditional buildings, including adobe, brick, stone and wooden are analyzed. The results are compared with modern (steel and concrete) buildings. Grey and blue WFs are accumulated along production chains, using WF accounting procedures and life cycle inventory. The grey WFs of traditional buildings are 327 times smaller than the grey WF of modern buildings. For modern buildings, the grey WF is dominated by the grey WF of steel and cement production. Blue WFs of traditional buildings are mostly related to construction employee. This paper would be relevant to those interested in traditional construction and rural houses
